On Land and in the Sea
The first Russian waterproof and shock resistant Amphibian category was born in 1967. The name “Amphibian” had been chosen for the new class of watches symbolizing the creature that is equally comfortable in water and on land.
At the first glance “Amphibian” is not any different from ordinary watches. But in reality, almost all elements of the case are extraordinary. Take the crystal: it is almost not noticeable but it has a unique curve. Indeed the crystal endures the pressure 20 kg/cm3 it is excessive, exceeding several times the pressure of a automobile tire on the surface of the road. Under this pressure the crystal bends by 0.5 mm. By bending, and slightly flattening it has to furthermore hermetically seal the case, at the same time not touching the seconds’ arm. The curve’s calculations are complex even for a flat crystal, even more so for such as for “Amphibian”.
“Amphibian” comes with a thicker crystal: if “Komandirskie” come with 2 mm, than “Amphibian” with – 3 mm. But it is not only due to the thickness and configuration it is manufactured in accordance with unique technology. In order to achieve gasket’s required specifications, at some time we even tried to process it by ionized method, technology utilized in space industry.
By examining closely, one could see that “Amphibian” differs from regular “Komandirskie” it is equipped with thicker synthetic glass, backcase and with enlarged screw-in construction crown.
